Grow Up Mentorship Program

One-year mentorship · Live online and in person

Grow Up Program for Professionals

GUMP is a one-year mentorship and community open to therapists, coaches, facilitators, bodyworkers, teachers and others who work closely with people and want to keep growing alongside the people they support. Facilitators join the same GUMP journey at the same price, with an additional professional integration layer throughout the year.

The missing piece

Many therapists, coaches and facilitators already have a lot of knowledge. You may understand trauma, attachment, nervous system regulation, parts work, boundaries and relational dynamics, and you may also have done years of your own inner work.

And still, there can be a gap between what we understand and how we actually work and live.

A group does not respond the way we expected. Somebody challenges us. A client reacts in a way we did not anticipate. We suddenly feel exposed, insecure, responsible or overwhelmed.

In those moments, many of us know how to keep functioning. We can push the activation aside, stay professional and deal with it later.

A central capacity in Grow Up is being able to catch ourselves while it is happening. To notice activation arising in the body, stay connected to our center, and metabolize enough of what is happening in the present moment that it does not quietly start running the session.

PAUSE YOUR MENTORSHIP

Life can get in the way

I know life can get in the way. If a year-long commitment feels like a lot, you’re welcome to pause your mentorship whenever you need. Just let me know how long you’d like to pause, and we’ll pick up right where you left off when you’re ready.

Note that you can pause your mentorship but not the payment plan (if you have one).

What is the content?

One process, applied to a whole life

Different people enter Grow Up through different branches of the tree. One person may come because of relationships, another because of work, belonging, sexuality, parenting or a feeling that they are not fully living their own life.

Is GUMP for you?

GUMP may be for you if you already work with people, lead groups or communities, or feel yourself moving in that direction.

You may recognise yourself here if:

  • You have already done a lot of training and inner work, but still notice your own patterns showing up when you lead or support others.

  • You want to become better at catching activation while it is actually happening, rather than only understanding it afterwards.

  • You recognise tendencies to merge, over-give, over-responsibilise yourself or feel that you should be able to hold more than you actually can.

  • You want your own development to continue alongside your professional work.

  • You want to understand nervous system regulation, attachment and younger parts through your own embodied experience.

  • You want to learn from being close to Li, guest teachers and many different processes over time.

  • You are a therapist, coach, facilitator, bodyworker, teacher or leader, or you are beginning to step into one of these roles.

Facilitators pay the same GUMP membership price as everyone else. The facilitator team and quarterly integration calls are included.

Before you decide

Three things people ask us most.

When your work with others meets your own patterns

Many of us who work with people came into this field because we care deeply about others. Underneath that care, there can also be survival strategies that have become part of what makes us good at the work.

The person who learned early to sense what everybody around them needed may become an attentive therapist or facilitator. The one who learned to take responsibility may become the person who can hold a whole room. At the same time, these same patterns can make it difficult to know when enough is enough.

We may give beyond our capacity, think about the people we support when we are not working, feel personally affected when somebody is not progressing, or put pressure on ourselves to find the thing that will finally help them.

At some point, we may lose our center and take on responsibility that does not actually belong to us.

When we can stay more connected to our own midline and center, the way we hold people changes. We can stay close to someone’s struggle without rushing to make something happen. We can see more clearly what is underneath the surface, lean back, stay present and let people meet themselves where they actually are.

Your own work continues too

Working with people does not mean that our own life stops bringing things up.

Relationships change. We become parents, separate, fall in love, lose people, change direction, meet new layers of our family history, sexuality, belonging or purpose. And because so much of the work we do with others is relational and connected to attachment, our own relationships and life experiences continue to be part of our development too.

For therapists, coaches and facilitators, it is especially important to have a place where we can continue being the person doing the work. A space where we do not always have to know, guide or hold, and where what is happening in our own life can receive attention.

GUMP gives you that ongoing container.

Over the year, you work with your own younger parts, nervous system, attachment strategies, relationships, boundaries, pleasure, conflict, work and purpose, just like everyone else in the program.

Of course this will also affect the way you work with people. As we become more able to stay with ourselves in our own life, we generally have more capacity to stay present with others too.

You are also here because your life keeps happening, even when you have become the person teaching or supporting everyone else.

Learning from how the work is facilitated

Being inside GUMP for a year also gives you another kind of professional education.

You are experiencing the work from the inside while getting to observe how Li and other guest teachers work with people over time.

A person may arrive with a conflict with their partner, difficulty setting a boundary, anxiety around work or a feeling of not being good enough. Li and the guest teachers will often look underneath the presenting problem: what the body is responding to, what age or part is present, what survival response has become coupled to the situation, and what the person actually needs in order to come back to themselves.

You will see many different people go through this process in many different ways.

Over time, seeing the work unfold with many different people gives you another pair of glasses for your own facilitation. You start to notice more, recognise patterns earlier and understand more clearly what may be happening underneath what someone first brings into the room.

A facilitator team within GUMP

If you join GUMP through the facilitator door, you pay the same price as everyone else and take part in the same year-long GUMP journey.

In addition, you become part of a facilitator team within the community, specifically for people who work with others.

Grow Up Mentorship Program

Rooted in polyvagal theory, Somatic Experiencing and attachment work, combined with dance, movement and embodied play

A psychosomatic education

Learning to understand yourself from the inside

Grow Up Mentorship Program breaks down complex understanding about the nervous system, trauma and maturity into simple tools and life lessons you can apply in your own daily life.

This is called an education because the intention is for you to increasingly understand your own system and become able to apply the work yourself as life is happening.

For facilitators this goes both ways: what you learn to recognise in yourself, you start to recognise in the room. As you become more familiar with activation, attachment strategies, younger parts and your own way back to center, you also become more able to recognise these processes when you are with other people.

In the beginning, mentors, guidance and community can be important. Over time, you learn to recognise what is happening inside you, understand what you need, and increasingly find your way back to your center yourself.

Not your normal therapist

Even though the depth of this work is connected to highly clinical and trauma-informed methods, Li is not your normal therapist.

Li’s work has also been shaped by years of lived experience in community, embodiment, spiritual practice and lifestyle change, including living in Mozambique, Brazil and other places around the world.

Li sometimes calls this work trauma fun.

The belief is that we do not grow only by sitting still and analysing ourselves. We also need to do this together. We need community and other people to mirror us. We need to play and explore pleasure. We need movement, dance and rhythm.

The main intention is still the inner work: building grown-up capacity, uncoupling the past from the present, and becoming more able to stay with ourselves when life gets challenging.

Along the way, you will also experience practices inspired by different cultures, traditions and ways of working with the body. Guest teachers join both online sessions and retreats to enrich the experience.

Growing up is also about becoming more alive in all aspects of life.

As a facilitator, you get to experience different ways of working through Li and the guest teachers, while continuing to do your own work inside the same space.

From Foundations into GUMP

If you have already joined Grow Up Foundations through the facilitator door, you have started learning the core process through your own experience first, while also looking at what the principles can mean in facilitation.

Foundations introduces you to uncoupling, resourcing, pendulation, survival responses and the development of grown-up capacity.

GUMP gives you the time to keep living and practising it.

Over a year, you continue bringing the work into your own relationships, body, boundaries, attachment, pleasure, conflict, work and purpose. At the same time, you have much more time to notice how your own growing capacity affects the way you sit with other people.

This order matters.

First we do the work ourselves. From there, we can begin to understand what our experience of that work teaches us about supporting somebody else.

If you continue from Grow Up Foundations into GUMP, the price paid for Foundations will be credited toward your GUMP membership. If you join GUMP before the next Foundations starts, Foundations is included as a bonus.
